SW Card, Ph.D. Stuart W. Card leads research and development of trustworthy networked autonomy to address the threats and opportunities posed by the complex interdependent networks and autonomous cyber-physical systems that convergein the Internet of Things. Raised in a family of educators and entrepreneurs, his first experience of profit and loss responsibility running a business unit came as a child. His Navy training included experiences operating aircraft, ships and submarines, plus the applied study of leadership. His PhD research applied information theory to evolutionary algorithm based Machine Learning, which he is extending to support causal reasoning for explainable Artificial Intelligence. His 30-plus years of military and commercial experience has included development of protocols, software and hardware for cable modems, wireline telecom testing, wireless communications interference mitigation, “cognitive” Software Defined Radio (SDR), wearable sensors, airborne radar, neural networks, fault tolerant storage, location based publish-subscribe-query data distribution services, financial information security measures for an international private equity firm, zero knowledge proofs, etc., yielding several patents. As a co-founder of Central New York State’s first commercial Internet service provider, he gained hands-on practical experience building, maintaining, operating and supporting customers/users of a 24×365 wide area network. He has led R&D and supported real world deployment of Internet Protocol (IP) Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTN) of air, land and sea mobile nodes, including Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, “drones”). Dr. Card is an active developer of international technical standards and a supporter of open source software, especially to facilitate independent formal verification, independent testing and real time remote attestation of system trustworthiness. Stu was a minor participant in the early days of the cypherpunks, the group from which blockchain based cryptocurrencies and smartcontracts emerged, and still believes in the potential of crypto to facilitate free speech and free markets as a rising tide to lift all boats C.M.
